Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential media personalities of our time. Over the years, she has encouraged generosity, compassion, personal growth, and concern for people who are hurting, and her charitable efforts have helped many. We can appreciate and commend those things.
At the same time, Oprah has used her enormous influence to promote a variety of spiritual teachers, books, and ideas associated with New Age spirituality—some of which directly contradict the teachings of the Bible. These include ideas concerning the nature of God, the divinity of human beings, spiritual enlightenment, the unity of religions, and the belief that there are many paths to God. She has also enthusiastically promoted spiritual teachers such as Eckhart Tolle and his bestselling book A New Earth. Why does this matter? Because spiritual ideas have eternal consequences. Something can sound loving, inspirational, and spiritually profound and still be false.
The resources below examine some of the spiritual teachings Oprah has promoted and compare them with the Bible. Our purpose is not to disparage Oprah personally, but to encourage Christians to exercise biblical discernment and carefully test every spiritual claim against the truth of God’s Word (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21).
