Shinto is the indigenous religious tradition of Japan and has profoundly influenced Japanese culture for centuries. Unlike many of the world’s major religions, Shinto has no single founder, universally binding creed, or authoritative book comparable to the Bible or Quran. Rather than emphasizing a detailed system of theology, Shinto is largely expressed through traditions, rituals, festivals, shrine visits, reverence for nature, and practices associated with purity, gratitude, and harmony.
Central to Shinto is belief in and reverence for kami. The word is sometimes translated “gods” or “spirits,” but neither term captures its full meaning. Kami may be associated with forces and objects in nature—such as mountains, rivers, trees, wind, and the sun—as well as ancestors, extraordinary individuals, and other beings or realities regarded as sacred or worthy of reverence. Shinto shrines throughout Japan are dedicated to particular kami, and worshipers may visit them to offer prayers, express gratitude, seek blessing or protection, and participate in rituals of purification.
Shinto is also deeply intertwined with Japanese culture. A person may participate in Shinto customs and ceremonies without thinking of himself or herself as particularly “religious.” Shinto and Buddhism have also coexisted in Japan for centuries, and it is not unusual for the same person or family to participate in traditions associated with both.
For Christians, Shinto raises some important worldview questions. Is the natural world inhabited by numerous divine or spiritual beings—or was nature created by one personal God who exists independently of His creation? Should human beings seek blessing and protection from various spiritual beings or ancestors? How can we be cleansed from our deepest spiritual impurity? And how does Shinto’s understanding of the spiritual world compare with what God has revealed in the Bible?
Christians can appreciate Shinto’s emphasis on gratitude, respect, beauty, and the wonder of the natural world while recognizing profound differences between Shinto and biblical Christianity. The Bible teaches that the beauty and power we see in creation point beyond nature to the one true Creator who made all things (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20). It also teaches that our greatest problem is not ritual impurity but sin, which separates us from God—and that cleansing, forgiveness, and reconciliation with Him are available through Jesus Christ.
